OTT is growing in Africa. This has prompted ‘traditional’ telecom and media companies to call for a regulation protecting their sustainability. This was heard on South Africa’s Parliament recently. OTT services bypass general regulations and they are often lower in cost. At the hearing, there were calls for parity in the operating costs of different players. Over the Top players have the advantage of operating without licenses that require traditional players to invest in the telecom infrastructure. Further, the taxes are lower too.
