Chinese regulators have ordered domestic producers of OTT boxes to get rid of illegal third-party apps from the boxes. The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China has taken out a list of 81 such illegal apps.

OTT TV boxes are used to stream content from the Internet onto TV sets. Users can watch a variety of videos and live programs, many of which are not available on traditional TV boxes.

The most popular Chinese OTT TV brands include Tmall TV box, Xiaomi TV box, Huawei TV box among others.

After the new ban is implemented, OTT TV platforms and manufacturers will lose their edge in the market. They will need to upgrade their operating systems to eliminate the 81 illegal applications, leaving users with fewer options in terms of what they can watch.
