The Consumer Federation of America and Public Knowledge sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission urging the agency to begin a rulemaking proceeding to reform the video set-top box market.

According to Consumer Federation of America’s analysis, pay-TV subscribers are overpaying somewhere between $6 and $14 billion annually.

The CFA says the FCC should promote a competitive set-top box market to reduce this financial burden on consumers, create opportunities for more innovative devices, and encourage the growth of diverse and independent programming. This can become a wonderful case study for OTT video services.
